Chaparral shrublands

Shrublands

Shrubland is a habitat dominated by shrubs and small, multi-stemmed woody plants, often mixed with scattered grasses and wildflowers. Tree cover is limited to less than 40% of the area, usually because of factors like poor soils, competition, or disturbances like wildfires or human clearing. NatureCheck places an emphasis on chaparral shrublands that are often characterized by chemise, manzanita, sage, scrub oak, and other drought-tolerant, hardy shrubs.
